The advantage of Bio-diesel with respect to all the countries is enormous. To start with, it will drastically reduce the import of crude oil/diesel, thereby saving valuable foreign exchange. Pongamia as a confident source of biodiesel has high oil content (approx. 40%) and can grow on malnourished soils with low levels of nitrogen and high levels of salt; it is fast becoming the focus of a number of biodiesel research programs.
The main advantages of Pongamia are that the higher recovery and quality of oil than other crops, no direct competition with food crops as it is a non-edible.
